GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University volleyball came from behind in the fourth set to finish off conference foe Greensboro College in a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night.
Averett (10-10, 7-1 USA South), which led the match 2-1 entering the fourth frame, quickly found itself trailing 8-3 in the set. Yet, the Cougars kept fighting to eventually knot the score, 10-10. Greensboro (10-10, 2-4 USA South) inched back in front 11-10 before Averett rattled off an eight-point run while forcing the Pride to take a timeout in the process. That stretch swung the momentum into Averett's favor for good as the Cougars downed the Pride 25-17 to seal the win.
Averett won the first set 25-20 and appeared ready to take the second set as well. The Cougars were up 20-18, but following a Greensboro timeout, the Pride followed with seven unanswered points to steal the set 25-20 and even the score, 1-1.
A strong start in Set 3 helped Averett take a 5-2 advantage early. Although Greensboro took the lead several times, the Cougars finished it strong. Tied 18-18, Averett won three consecutive points to take a 21-18 lead and eventually win 25-23.
