Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Averett University volleyball team dropped its final two games of the regular season on Saturday to Salisbury University 3-2 and Christopher Newport University 3-0 as part of the CNU Invitational.
In the opener, Averett (17-15) rebounded following an opening set loss to Salisbury on Saturday to take Set 2 in extra points, 32-30, and even the match at 1-1.
The Cougars carried that momentum into Set 3, winning 26-24 to take a 2-1 lead over the Sea Gulls. However, Salisbury (17-10) evened the match at 2-2 with a 25-20 Set 4 victory, forcing a deciding fifth set, before taking the match 3-2 with a 15-7 Set 5 win.
No individual stats or details were immediately available.
In the Cougar's final match of the day, Christopher Newport (24-9) held a slight 11-8 advantage in the opening set before rolling off a 6-1 run to take a 17-9 edge, before closing out Set 1 25-15. The Captains capitalized on an early 1-0 lead, taking Set 2 25-12 and the eventual deciding third set by the final of 25-13 to beat Averett 3-0.
Sophomore
Sarah Shropshire lead the team with seven kills and 11 digs, while junior
McKenzie Miller tallied 14 assists.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday when they the first round of the USA South Conference tournament.
