ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A big second quarter helped propel Averett University women's basketball to a 77-63 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday to finish play at the Jean Edge Classic hosted by N.C. Wesleyan College.
Averett (4-2) turned a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter into a sizable lead by outscoring St. Mary's (0-5) by a 27-8 margin during the second quarter. The lead, coupled with freshman
Courtney Scott's career-high 18 points helped the Cougars cruise to victory and go 2-0 at the Jean Edge Classic.
Led by Scott, Averett had four players score in double figures as seniors
Brooke Carthon and
Ravyn Johnson and freshman
Briana Payne each finished with 10 points. Carthon had a team-high six rebounds as well as the Cougars' entire roster saw action.
Scott and Carthon both earned a spot on the all-tournament team.Â
Outside of a close first quarter, Averett controlled the contest with the Seahawks. St. Mary's made a small run to get back within 14 midway through the fourth quarter. Averett made 14 steals while forcing 24 turnovers, which turned into 28 points.
Sophomore
Genesis Weiters added a career-high eight points to go with five boards and sophomore
Rana Davis-Robinson added a career-high six points off the bench.
Averett takes a break for Thanksgiving before opening USA South Conference play at home on Dec. 6 against Mary Baldwin University.
