BREVARD, N.C. — Averett University football lost 10-9 at Brevard College on Saturday night after the Tornados scored the go-ahead touchdown with 52 seconds remaining.
Brevard (6-2, 4-2) scored all 10 of its points in the fourth quarter to steal the win after senior kicker
Cole Westberry had given Averett (6-3, 4-2 USA South) a 9-0 lead on three field goals earlier in the game.
Westberry put Averett up 3-0 with his 38-yard field goal with 11:35 to go in the first quarter. Westberry's make on Averett's first possession helped give him 34 field goals for his career, matching the USA South Conference's career record set by Huntingdon College's Chase Young last season. The two teams, which rank among the top two in the USA South in terms of points allowed this season, kept each other off the scoreboard the rest of the first half following Westberry's early field goal.
Westberry passed Young to take sole place of the career field goal record with his 39-yard shot with 5:19 left in the third quarter, extending Averett's lead to 6-0.
The Cougars then escaped a game-changing play on the ensuing kickoff, which appeared to be returned 98 yards for a touchdown. However, the play was called back for holding, and on the first play from scrimmage, senior
Octavius Ross forced a fumble that sophomore
Joseph Ledbetter recovered. Although Averett's drive stalled, Westberry connected for his third field goal of the day — a 31-yard boot to push Averett's lead to 9-0 with 2:38 left in the third quarter.
Brevard got its first points of the night on a 35-yard field goal by Stamati Damalos with 7:23 left in the fourth quarter, pulling the Tornados within 9-3. Averett's next drive stalled, giving Brevard another opportunity. Starting at their own 42-yard line, the Tornados moved into Averett territory as the clock winded down. With 52 seconds remaining, Dalton Cole found Blake Taylor for a 36-yard touchdown to tie the game, 9-9. Damalos hit the extra point to put Brevard ahead by one.
Averett got the ball near midfield on the kickoff return by senior
Chris Francis, but an interception on third down sealed the game for Brevard.
Francis notched his first 100-yard rushing performance with 113 yards on 25 carries. Sophomore
Jarrod Mosby led the receivers with seven catches for 52 yards as senior quarterback
Jacob Wright's favorite target. Wright completed 16 passes for 152 yards.
Senior
Hunter Hinson led the defense with nine tackles.
Averett finishes the season with a home game against Methodist University at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Senior Day ceremonies begin prior to kickoff.
