DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's basketball missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer as Huntingdon College held on for a 93-92 conference victory on Wednesday afternoon at the Grant Center.
Averett (6-5, 2-1 USA South) rallied back from a 17-point second-half deficit to tie the game, 90-90, on senior
Montre' Cash's transition layup with 1:34 to play. The Cougars took their first lead, 92-90, since the midway point of the first half on a jumper in the paint by junior
Raymond Bullock III with 19.1 seconds remaining.
Huntingdon's James Harris pulled up for a 3-pointer in the final seconds, hitting the contested shot with 5.3 seconds left. After the Cougars took a timeout, Averett got one look at a 3-pointer from the top of the key that rattled off the rim, preserving the Hawks' win.
Bullock went off for a career-high 34 points to go with 11 rebounds, while Cash finished with 24 points as he helped fuel the Averett comeback down the stretch.
Huntingdon (4-6, 2-2 USA South) drained 7-of-14 shots from beyond the arc in the first half and shot 63 percent from the floor overall during the first 20 minutes as the Hawks took a 51-37 lead at halftime. Bullock surpassed his old career high of 16 points with 19 points on 6-of-6 shooting in the first half.
The Hawks extended their lead to as much as 17 points several times in the opening minutes of the second half. A 5-0 run sparked by Cash help get Averett back within 74-69 and the Cougars continued to chip away down the stretch before eventually tying it with 1:34 remaining.
Damien Madison led Huntingdon with 24 points and Aaron Washington hit five 3-pointers to help give him 21 points off the bench.
Averett also got 12 points from senior
Timothy Henry and 10 points from freshman
Corey Baldwin. The Cougars shot 50.8 percent as a team.
Averett returns to action after the holiday break on Jan. 4 when the Cougars play host to LaGrange College.
