LEXINGTON, Va. — The Averett University baseball team dropped a 9-1 decision to Washington and Lee University Sunday afternoon.

Averett (0-3, 0-0 USA South) surrendered a lone run in the bottom of the first inning, but held the Generals scoreless for the next four innings as sophomore
Ryan Traylor (0-1) turned in a noteworthy performance through five innings, striking out four batters.Â

However, Washington and Lee (3-0, 0-0 ODAC) added four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning of play.

The Generals increased their lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring four runs on two hits.

The Cougars got on the board in the top of the eighth inning when sophomore
Tanner Bradshaw reached on a throwing error by the Generals, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a passed ball.Â

Traylor got the start for the Cougars scattering seven hits over five innings and allowing just two earned runs. Senior
Matt Tuggle finished the game on the mound for Averett striking out one batter and allowing one hit in a single inning of work.Â

Tom Kellogg (1-0) got the win for the Generals lasting five innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits in the effort.Â

The Cougars return back to action Tuesday, Feb. 12 as they host Bridgewater College with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.Â
