DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team fell to Oglethorpe University, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (0-2) got on the board first as freshman
Lucas Jayne scored his first career goal off an assist from sophomore
Rafael Walker. However, Oglethorpe (1-1) answered with three first half goals to take a 3-1 lead going into halftime. The Stormy Petrels built off that momentum by scoring three goals in the third quarter to extend the lead to 6-1 with six unanswered goals heading into the fourth quarter. Freshman
Marques Fleming added his first career goal with 2:26 left in the game, but Averett couldn't come back from there.
As a team, the Cougars outshot Oglethrope, 31-26, while the teams tied with 12 shots on goal. Averett also went 18-31 on clear attempts, compared to 15-28 from the Stormy Petrels. As a team, the Cougars caused 24 turnovers while the Stormy Petrels caused 17.
Individually for Averett, freshman
Sam Garrett led the team with nine ground balls and five caused turnovers, while sophomore
Miska Granlund also had five caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls. Sophomore
Jordan Wigington added six ground balls and four caused turnovers. In goal, sophomore
Jacob Shriver made six saves while adding eight ground balls.
The Cougars return to action on March 2 at 1 p.m. as they play host to Shenandoah University.
