MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Averett University baseball team dropped the final game of its USA South Conference opening series with Huntingdon College by a final of 12-6 Sunday afternoon.

Averett (1-7, 0-3 USA South) got on the board in the top of the second inning when senior
Matt Tuggle scored with bases loaded on sophomore
Ryan Traylor's walk. That gave way for senior
Kyle Vidano who ripped a ball through the left side plating junior
Andrew Lancaster and freshman
Jason Maggs for the early 3-0 lead.

Huntingdon (9-0, 3-0 USA South) added runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to pull within one run of the Cougars, before exploding for four runs in both the bottom of fifth and seventh innings to take a commanding 11-3 lead.

The Hawks added an insurance run in the eighth to push their lead to 12-3, but Averett would not go quietly on the afternoon as junior
Tucker Majetic singled in the top of the ninth to score freshman
Brandon Hatcher to make the score 12-4.

Freshman
Dawsyn Hock singled through the right side driving in senior
Corey Wall to make it 12-5 and Majectic scored on a wild pitch for the final Cougars run to make it 12-6.

Junior
Sawyer Smith and Freshman
Jason Maggs each finished with two hits apiece for the Cougars, while Vidano, junior
Chase McKinney, Tuggle, Majetic and Wall all added hits.

Averett will take a brief one game break from conference play this coming Wednesday as they host Roanoke College at 2 p.m. at Owen-Fulton Field.
