EMORY, Va. — Junior
Brooke Carthon reached the 1,000-point milestone, but the Averett University women's basketball team had its six-game winning streak halted in an 87-52 non-conference road loss at Emory & Henry College on Sunday.
Averett (16-8, 12-3 USA South) fell into a 10-point deficit early and couldn't recover as Emory & Henry (18-3, 11-3 ODAC), which is receiving votes in the national poll, used hot shooting, finishing with a 52.2 field goal percentage, to pull away from the start.
Emory & Henry came out hot from the start, jumping out to a 10-0 lead just 2:49 into the game. The Wasps eventually extended this lead out to 20-5 before the Cougars ripped off a 9-5 run to close out the first quarter and trailed, 25-14, after one quarter of play.
Averett then started out the second quarter with buckets from Carthon, senior
Amani Ajayi and a 3-pointer from freshman
Camryn Lunsford to cut the gap to within nine points with 6:28 remaining in the first half. However, Emory & Henry concluded the half on an 18-6 run from there to head into halftime with a commanding 48-27 lead.
This trend continued to start the second half, as the Wasps expanded their lead to as many as 29 points before the Cougars struck back to head into the fourth quarter with a 67-41 deficit. Emory & Henry didn't let its foot off the gas in the fourth quarter as it handed Averett its first loss in over two weeks.
Carthon was the lone Averett player to reach double-digit scoring with 14 points on 6-13 shooting with two rebounds. Junior
Ravyn Johnson was next up with seven points and six rebounds.
Carthon became the ninth player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point milestone.
Having already secured at least the No. 2 seed in the USA South Conference East Division, Averett looks to bounce back as it faces Meredith College on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. The Cougars can secure the No. 1 seed with a win and a loss from Greensboro College in one of its final two conference games.
