Men's lacrosse drops non-conference matchup to Ferrum

Box Score DANVILLE, Va. — In returning home for non-conference action, the Averett University men's lacrosse team fell to Ferrum College, 10-1, at home on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Averett (0-5) played good defense in the first quarter of play, allowing just one goal as the Ferrum (1-6) took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first. Ferrum scored two more goals in the second quarter before freshman Mason Foy added his first career goal off an assist from sophomore Joonas Mattila to make it a 3-1 game with 5:28 left in the half. The Panthers added to more goals in the first half to extend their lead, 5-1, heading into the second half. Averett couldn't get any momentum going in the second half as Ferrum added five more goals to close out the game.

Mattila shared the team lead in shots with freshman Lucas Jayne, as they each had five shots with two shots on goal for Averett. Meanwhile, Mattila, Foy and freshman Sam Garrett tied for a team-high three ground balls each. In goal, sophomore Jacob Shriver made 14 saves for a save percentage of 58.3.

The Cougars return home on Friday as they host the Franciscan University of Steubenville at 5 p.m.
