MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Averett University softball powered past Maryville College 8-0 in six innings in Game 2 to earn a non-conference split with the Scots on Saturday. Maryville took the opener 3-1.
After dropping the first game, Averett (7-2) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in Game 2. Junior
Kaitlyn Aherron led off the game with a solo homer down the right field line. The Cougars tacked on three more runs in the frame thanks to an RBI double by freshman
Hannah Thompson and RBI singles from freshmen
Anna Coleman and
Zamyiah Mangum.
Ahead 4-0 over Maryville (4-2), Mangum brought home another run with a sacrifice fly in the third. Freshman
Erin Rankin added an RBI single in the top of the fourth to extend Averett's lead to 6-0. Coleman capped off a 3-for-3 performance in Game 2 with a two-run double in the top of the sixth to increase the Cougars' advantage to 8-0, helping Averett put away Maryville an inning early after it held the Scots scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.
Thompson (4-0) struck out six and allowed only three hits and no walks in a shutout to remain undefeated in the circle.
Averett's offense had 16 hits in the second game, led by Rankin's 4-for-4 effort. Thompson joined Coleman with three hits, while Aherron and junior
Nicole Cauthen each had two.
Maryville took Game 1 after breaking a 1-1 score in the fifth inning. The Scots led 1-0 early thanks to an RBI single in the first inning. Averett battled back to tie it in the top of the fifth on Rankin's RBI single up the middle, which scored junior
Casey Cook. However, Maryville answered in the bottom of the frame with a go-ahead solo homer by Christen Torres. The Scots added an insurance run on Christina White's RBI single.
Averett matched Maryville with seven hits in the opener but left eight runners on base. Aherron and Rankin each had two hits.
Junior
Taylor Bailey (3-1) took the loss despite a solid effort. She allowed three runs — two earned— on seven hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
Although Averett and Maryville are conference foes, the game did not count toward conference standings since the two teams are in different divisions.
Averett travels to the University of Lynchburg on Thursday for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
