DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team scored 27 goals on Saturday which is the most they have scored in a game throughout the history of their program. The Cougars won their fourth consecutive match with a 27-10 win over William Peace University.
The difference in the match came during the first half as Averett (7-2, 3-0 USA South) led 17-4 at the halftime break. During the opening frame, the Cougars had the edge in ground balls (28-15) and draw controls (14-8) which helped them maintain the majority of the offensive possession and create a multitude of scoring opportunities. The navy and gold had 28 shots in the first half with 24 of those attempts being put on frame. Sophomore
Elizabeth Peasley had six goals in the first 30 minutes of play while freshman
Courtney DeLone scored five to pace the Cougars early on. Twice during the first half, the Cougars scored six unanswered goals which helped them keep the pressure on William Peace (6-2, 3-2 USA South) heading into the break in action.
The second half was more of a back and forth affair, with Averett outscoring William Peace by just a 10-6 margin. The Pacers had the edge in draw controls (9-8) while Averett held the lead in ground balls (17-11) and shots on goal (11-10). While the second half was played more closely, the Cougars first half performance fueled Averett to the 27-10 win.
Peasley tied her career-high with nine goals and in addition broke the all-time career points record in program history. Darcie Jones (2005-07) previously held the record with 127 career points before Peasley scored her seventh goal of the match to move ahead of Jones.
DeLone and junior
Abby Taylor each netted career-highs in goals as DeLone had eight on the day while Taylor registered the hat-trick. Freshman
