Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Sophomore
Kyle Lamantia came one out away from throwing the first no-hitter in Averett University history, as baseball held on for a thrilling 1-0 Â victory over Bridgewater College on the road Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Bridgewater (7-15) would hold the Cougars in check for the opening three innings as Eagles starter Brandon Floyd threw two perfect innings before giving way to Sam Imeson.Â
Â
Imeson would pitch a scoreless third inning, however freshman
Jason Maggs would lead off the top of the fourth inning with a hit by pitch, later advancing to second following sophomore
Tucker Majetic's walk and came around to score the winning run on back-to-back wild pitches.Â
Â
Averett (4-20) would take full advance of Maggs fourth inning run allowing just one hit over the final five innings to secure the 1-0 victory.Â
Â
Lamantia turned in arguably his best performance in an Averett uniform, striking out four batters over 8.2 innings.  The right-hander carried a no-hitter into the final out of Wednesday's non-conference battle before Kevin Navedo hit a line drive triple to left field that sailed just past the dive of Majetic.Â
Â
The Eagles put runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth, but freshman
Avery Spicer came out of the bullpen for the Cougars and slammed the door with a strikeout for his first career save.Â
Â
Lamantia and Spicer would combine for a one hit shutout victory as Majetic, sophomore
Dante George and freshman
Dawsyn Hock all recorded hits.Â
Â
The Cougars will return back to action Thursday when they travel to the University of Lynchburg for a 3 p.m. start.Â
