VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — With the help of a strong showing in doubles play, the Averett University men's tennis team came away with a 6-3 win over Virginia Wesleyan University on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Averett (4-1) earned the sweep over Virginia Wesleyan (2-4) in doubles play to secure three crucial points to start things off. Junior

Patrick Shields earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while senior
Abdugani Ganiev and freshman
Fabian Howding secured the 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. The duo of sophomore

Mathias Reusch capped off doubles play with an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 slot.
In singles play, Yanes beat Virginia Wesleyan's Paul Gladstone in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. In No. 2 singles, Shields came away with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nick Gunther. Meanwhile, Ganiev came away with a thrilling victory over Andreas Combos at No. 3 singles in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9, that gave Averett six points as a team on the day and sealed the victory.
Next up for Averett is a conference matchup on the road against Greensboro College on March 16 at 1 p.m.
