DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball fell 5-2 to Greensboro College in five innings in a rain-shortened game that was resumed Saturday after play was suspended on Friday.
Averett (25-14, 9-7 USA South) lost its opener 11-4 to Greensboro (23-12, 9-6 USA South) to begin Friday's scheduled doubleheader, but storms halted Game 2 with the Cougars ahead 2-0 in the third inning, forcing play to be halted.
Prior to the heavy rain and storms rolling in Friday, Averett had built a 2-0 lead in Game 2. Freshman
Hannah Thompson crushed a solo homer to left-center in the first inning, and junior
Taylor Bailey's RBI triple in the second inning gave the Cougars a two-run advantage when play was stopped in the top of the third with no outs and a runner on first for Greensboro.
When play resumed on Saturday after more delays, Greensboro quickly tied the game in the top of the third. Hanna Stackhouse drove in a pair of runs with her single up the middle, knotting the game at 2-2.
The Pride struck again in the fifth. Following a leadoff single and a walk, Caroline Stanley lifted a two-run triple to center field to give Greensboro the lead. An RBI groundout later in the inning scored Stanley, put the Pride ahead 5-2.
Averett got a two-out triple from freshman
Erin Rankin and a walk from Thompson to put the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the fifth. However, Greensboro got out of the jam with a check-swing that was ruled as strike three. The game was called after five innings because of continuous rain and worsening field conditions throughout the contest.
Averett awaits its seeding for the USA South Conference Tournament, which will begin with a best-of-three series on Friday, April 19.
