Women's lacrosse sets program record for most single-season wins with victory over Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team secured the most wins in a single season in program history with an 18-6 victory over Greensboro College on Saturday.

Freshman Adriana Perez gave Averett (11-4, 7-2 USA South) the 1-0 lead with a goal in the second minute of play before Greensboro tallied a goal themselves with 24:22 left in the first half to level the match at one. However, the Cougars regained the momentum in a hurry as Averett scored seven unanswered goals over the next 15:05 of game time to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Freshman Courtney DeLone registered a hat-trick during this period of time to pace the Cougars.

Greensboro (6-7, 5-4 USA South) would score in the 24th minute, but the Cougars would answer back with goals from senior Alixis Roccia and sophomore Haley Boardway in the last five minutes of the opening half to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.

Averett scored the first four goals of the second half ending with a tally from sophomore Elizabeth Peasley at the 24:47 mark to give the Cougars a comfortable 14-2 lead. Both sides would go on to score four goals the rest of the way to leave the score in favor of Averett at 18-6 once the final horn went off. At the completion of the match, Averet held the lead in shots (32-17), ground balls (29-16) and draw controls (21-5).

Peasley led the way with five goals for Averett which moved her to 74 on the season. This is a new school record as the Wilmington, North Carolina, native broke the single-season scoring record a year ago as a freshman when she ended her rookie campaign with 72 goals. In addition to the five goals, Peasley also contributed four assists which are a career-high for the attacker. DeLone finished with four goals while Roccia was credited with the hat-trick.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday when Averett travels to take on N.C. Wesleyan College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
