MISENHEIMER, N.C. — The Averett University baseball team dropped its series opening doubleheader with Pfeiffer University by finals of 12-2 and 16-1, Saturday evening on the road.
Game 1:
Averett (6-29, 3-17 USA South) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning Saturday benefitting when sophomore
Tanner Bradshaw reached on a fielder's choice that scored freshman
Brandon Hatcher.
However, Pfeiffer (25-6, 15-5 USA South) benefitted from a six run bottom of the fifth inning, four runs coming on a grand slam home run.
The Falcons added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead.
The Cougars would plate a run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Ryan Traylor that scored junior
Nick Winston.
Pfeiffer added four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend its lead to 12-2 over Averett.
Offensively, junior
Chase McKinney led the way, collecting two hits on the evening while Winston, junior
Zack DeCarlo, junior
Andrew Lancaster and Hatcher all added hits for the Cougars.
Game 2:
The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Traylor to right center that scored DeCarlo.
The Falcons however, went off for six in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-1 advantage over the Cougars.
Pfeiffer would add two more runs in the third and seven more in the fourth inning to push its lead to 15-1, before adding a run in the sixth inning to take a commanding 16-1 edge.
Winston and freshman
Dawsyn Hock led the charge for the Cougars at the plate each finishing with two hits apiece while Traylor and senior
Corey Wall collected the Cougars remaining hits.
Junior
Sawyer Smith threw well in relief for the Cougars pitching a scoreless inning, not allowing a hit and striking out two, while freshman
Josh Adkins pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and one earned run, while also amassing four strikeouts.
The Cougars return back to action Sunday afternoon when they return to Misenheimer, North Carolina for the series finale beginning at 1 p.m.
