DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season on Friday with a 22-3 victory over Brevard College. Freshman
Hannah Mae Ayers collected 12 assists in the effort to break the USA South record for most assists recorded in a single game.
Averett (13-4, 9-2 USA South) took control of the game from the opening whistle and it paid off for the Cougars in the first half as they outshot Brevard (6-10, 3-8 USA South) 20-2. The Cougars were able to maintain the majority of the possession because they had the 12-8 edge in ground balls and the 10-6 lead in draw controls. The intense pressure from the Cougars caused 14 Tornado turnovers in the first half leading to 16 Averett goals. Averett combined this offensive onslaught with gritty defense which held Brevard scoreless in the first half.
In the second half, the game was a much tighter affair as Brevard began to gain more rhythm offensively. Both sides were equal at five in draw controls with Averett holding the slight 13-10 advantage in shots. However, the strong first half performance put in by Averett turned out to be the difference maker as the Cougars cruised to the 22-3 win.
In addition to breaking the conference record for most assists in a game, Ayers also scored two goals to give her 14 total points which is a new school record for most points registered in a game. Senior
Alixis Roccia matched her career-high with seven goals.
Averett will start to prepare for the semifinals of the 2019 USA South Conference Tournament which will be held in LaGrange, Georgia, next Friday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
