DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Berea College on Saturday at Owen-Fulton Field backed by a stellar pitching performances from seniors
Dillon Roberts and
Matt Tuggle.
Game 1:
Averett (8-30, 5-18 USA South) would take a 2-0 advantage early in Game 1 Saturday as senior
Corey Wall singled to open the inning and senior
A.J. Hart reached via a walk. Wall later came around to score on back-to-back passed balls while Hart scored on junior
Andrew Lancaster's sacrifice fly out to center field.
Roberts got the start on the mound for the Cougars, pitching 4.1 strong innings, striking out three and allowing the Mountaineers lone run for the game.
Berea (9-28, 3-20 USA South) got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, scoring off Roberts before being lifted with one out in the inning for senior
Hunter Collins. Collins picked up the win in relief for the Cougars pitching 2.2 innings allowing just one hit and striking out one.
The Cougars responded to Berea's run in the top half of the fifth inning with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, making it 3-1 on an RBI-double down the left field line by junior
Nick Winston and increasing their advantage to 5-1 when Tuggle doubled to left field, scoring junior
Chase McKinney and Winston.
Junior
Sawyer Smith and sophomore
Cole Spain would combine for two shutout innings to preserve the 5-1 victory, each allowing one hit and striking out one.
Tuggle led the charge offensively for Averett finishing 2-4 from the plate with two RBI's, while Winston, sophomore
Ryan Traylor, Wall and Lancaster all added hits.
Game 2:
Tuggle would get the start in Game 2 for the Cougars and the senior right hander would not disappoint in his final start for Averett. Striking out 10 batters over 8.1 innings of work while allowing eight hits and picking up his first win of the season.
However, Berea struck first in Game 2 after six shutout innings, scoring two runs in the top half of the seventh inning to take a 2-0 advantage over the Cougars.
Averett would be held off the board for the first seven innings as Tuggle returned to the mound for the eighth inning, posting his seventh zero in the line score, giving way to the Cougars' offense in the bottom half of the inning.
The Cougars would lift the senior up in the bottom of the eighth, scoring their first run on a double down the right field line by McKinney that scored Winston from second and forced junior
Zack DeCarlo to hold up at third.
DeCarlo scored the tying run on Traylor's sacrifice fly out to right field. Freshman
Brandon Hatcher would be the hero offensively in Game 2, as with two outs, the freshman laced a single through the left side the drove in McKinney for the go ahead run.
Tuggle returned to the mound for the ninth inning, before being lifted with one out and the applause of his teammates and Traylor came in to strike out the final two batters and lock down the win for his first save.
The Cougars put in a complete team effort in Game 2 as eight players combined for hits as junior
Cody Jones picked up a hit in a pinch hit role, while Lancaster, Hart, sophomore
Dante George, Hatcher, McKinney, Wall and DeCarlo all recorded hits.
Averett honored seven seniors prior to Game 1 on Saturday as senior

Deondre' Branch, Collins and Tuggle all played their final games at Owen-Fulton Field.
