RALEIGH, N.C. — The Averett University women's tennis team concluded its regular season slate with a 9-0 victory over William Peace University on the road on Saturday.
Averett (12-5, 6-2 USA South) started off in a dominant fashion, as the team of senior
Heidi Sarkkinen and sophomore
Eleanor Crane, the freshmen pair of
Inka Zeilstra and
Kristina Hedelt and the duo of freshman
Rainey Townsend and senior
Ashley Thornton all earned 8-0 wins in doubles competition over William Peace (1-11, 1-7 USA South).
The Cougars kept this momentum going into singles play, as No. 21 Sarkinnen, Crane, Zeilstra and Hedelt all came away with 6-0, 6-0 wins in the first four slots. Townsend and Thornton then capped it off with 6-0, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-1 victories, respectively, to seal the sweep.
With this being the final match of the regular season, Averett has locked up a No. 3 seed in the USA South East Division and is currently scheduled to face the West No. 2-seeded Huntingdon College in the opening round of the USA South Conference Tournament on April 26.
