The Series: Dating back to 1996, Averett holds a 14-4 series lead against Maryville, including a 2-1 mark in USA South Tournament play. Averett's lone loss to the Scots in tournament play was on Friday when Maryville outlasted Averett 2-1 in eight innings. During the regular season, the two teams split a doubleheader at Maryville this spring.
Averett at a Glance: The Cougars, who are the No. 5 seed in the East Division, battled back from the elimination side of the tournament bracket on Saturday by winning three games to get back into the championship. After a loss to Maryville on Friday, the Cougars topped Piedmont College 4-1 to begin Saturday's run. Then Averett beat Huntingdon College for the second time in two days with a walk-off 3-2 win. That set up a meeting with Salem College, who Averett knocked off 8-6. The Cougars will now need to beat Maryville twice on Sunday to hoist the trophy for the second time in three seasons.
Maryville at a Glance: Maryville, the West Division No. 1 seed, remained in the winner's bracket by beating Salem 9-3 in its only game on Saturday. The Scots have the upper hand entering the championship, needing to beat the Cougars only once since they have yet to lose in the double-elimination tournament.
Past championship success: The Cougars have won two conference tournament titles in their program's history. Averett won its first in 2004, and also won it two years ago in 2017 in LaGrange.
What's at stake: The winner of the USA South Tournament earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional.
