HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.
— In a game that was scoreless for the first 90 minutes, sophomore
Johnny Kummander wasted no time after regulation, scoring just 36 seconds into overtime to lift the Averett University men's soccer team over Hampden-Sydney College, 1-0, on the road on Wednesday night.
This marked the second straight win for Averett (2-3), who looks to build on a winning streak going when conference play gets going this weekend.
The first half was a quiet one for both sides, as neither Averett nor Hampden-Sydney (1-5) managed to get on the scoreboard. There was then a set back as the game went into a one-hour and 45-minute weather delay that occurred just 1:10 into the second half. Following the delay, both teams traded a handful of shots but neither could put it in the net as the game went into overtime.
However, it didn't take long for that to change as Kummander struck quickly with the game-winning goal in the first minute of overtime to secure the win for the Cougars.
Kummander tied the team lead with two shots on the night, while sophomore
Baste Endresen also notched two shots. Junior
Colton Dutchess made six saves in goal while recording his second straight shutout.
The Cougars look to keep the momentum going return home to kick off USA South Conference play as they host Berea College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
