The Series: Averett is 0-8 all-time against Randolph-Macon, including a 0-4 mark at home. However, Averett has played the Yellow Jackets within 10 points or less three times. Randolph-Macon won last year's meeting 24-14 in Ashland.
Averett at a Glance:  The Cougars, who were picked as the USA South Conference preseason favorite, opened the season with a 28-16 road win against Hampden-Sydney College on Sept. 7. Averett's defense totaled seven sacks against the Tigers, while the Cougars' offense threw for three touchdowns. Averett also got a big lift from special teams as senior Joshua Tapscott returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to swing momentum the Cougars' way. Tapscott was named the USA South Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday and was selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, along with senior punter Cole Westberry, who tied the program record with a 69-yard punt. 
Randolph-Macon at a Glance: The Yellow Jackets were named the favorite in the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason poll. Ranked 24th in the D3football.com preseason poll, Randolph-Macon fell out this week after losing its season-opening game to then-No. 6 Johns Hopkins University 17-12. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 185 yards against Johns Hopkins, but threw for only 94 yards. Randolph-Macon's running attack is led by D3football.com Preseason All-America running back Tre Frederick and offensive lineman Jake Wernle. Overall, the Yellow Jackets return 12 all-conference performers from 2018.
