Volleyball drops pair of non-conference matchups to Maryville, Bridgewater

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University Volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests to Maryville College 3-0 and Bridgewater College 3-1 on Saturday.

Game 1:

Maryville (8-5) managed to take a 25-18 set one victory to take an early 1-0 lead, before hanging on to win a contested 25-20 set two push its lead to 2-0.

Averett (3-9) would fall 25-13 in the final set giving Maryville a 3-0 victory.

Sophomore Zamyiah Mangum led the team with eight kills and 15 digs, while junior McKenzie Miller dished out a team-high 18 assists and collected 14 scoops.

Senior Madison Dadez finished with two solo blocks and four kills, while freshman Morgan Barnes contributed three block assists and four kills.

Game 2:

Averett would jump out in the first set against Bridgewater claiming a 25-18 set victory, aided by 12 kills.

Bridgewater (14-1) rebounded in set two to tie the match a 1-1 with a 25-15 win, later claiming set three by that same score to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

The Eagles would hold on in the fourth set to win 25-14 and take the game by the final of 3-1.

Dadez and freshman Lauren Montren led the team with seven kills apiece, while sophomore Sarah Shropshire and Barnes each added six kills each.

Miller would finish with a team-high 26 assists and 11 digs, while Montren collected a team-high 23 digs.

Mangum finished the contest with double-digit scoops as well, recording 16, while junior Myka Patterson added 12.

Barnes, Dadez and Mangum all added five block assists apiece, while Barnes collected a solo block.

The Cougars return back to action Wednesday when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to battle 2019 USA South East Division Champion Meredith College at 7 p.m.
