LAURINBURG, N.C.
— The Averett University wrestling team earned a dominant 53-3 victory on the road over Saint Andrews University on Friday night.
With the win, Averett (4-6) notched both the most points and largest margin of victory in a dual in program history.
The Cougars started out with two wins by forfeit at 157 and 165 pounds to take an early 12-0 lead. Freshman
Noah Wienclawski then won by pin at 174 pounds to extend the lead to 18-0. Forfeits at 184, 197 and 285 pounds then gave the Cougars a commanding 36-0 lead heading back into the lightweights.
No. 5 junior
Sam Braswell continued his strong campaign with a 17-1 victory by tech fall at 125 pounds. Sophomore
Joseph Jones then won by disqualification after his opponent got five stalling calls in the match, giving Averett a 47-0 lead.
No. 8 junior
Brandon Woody also built off his impressive year with a pin at 141 pounds, giving Averett a 53-0 lead. Saint Andrews (1-5) won the final match by decision at 149 pounds, finalizing the dual at 53-3.
Averett returns to action on Sunday to compete in the Apprentice School Builder Invitational on Sunday at 9 a.m.
