DANVILLE, Va.
— In its first home event since early November, the Averett University wrestling team fell to Washington and Lee University, 28-9, in the Grant Center on Thursday night.
Averett (6-8) started off with two hard-fought losses by decision at 125 and 133 pounds, giving Washington and Lee (12-5) an early 6-0 lead. That is when No. 9 junior
Brandon Woody turned the tide for the Cougars at 141 pounds with a clutch pin in the third period to tie the dual back up at 6-6. The win was Woody's 31st of the season.
However, the Generals fired back with six-straight wins in the proceeding weight classesÂ
— one by tech fall, two by major decision, two by decision and one by sudden victoryÂ
— to clinch the dual with a 28-6 lead with one bout remaining.
Freshman
Trent Ragland's strong season then continued with a 5-0 win by decision at 285 as the dual ended at 28-9. The win was Ragland's 14th of the season.
The Cougars have a quick turnaround with a dual on the road against Bluefield College on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
