DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball team's 79-50 senior day victory over Salem College on Saturday clinched the No. 3 seed in the USA South Conference East Division.
Averett (17-8, 11-5 USA South) got off to a slow start, but capitalized on several late first quarter possessions to take an 18-11 lead following the opening quarter.
The Cougars continued their momentum into the second quarter, posting a 47-21 halftime and cruised through the second half to the eventual 79-50 win.
Senior
Brooke Carthon led all scorers with 18 points and finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.
Fellow senior
Ravyn Johnson impressed with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double, while also racking up a game-high four steals on the day.
Freshman
Courtney Scott finished with 14 points for the Cougars while senior
Zenise Chambers dished out a career-high five assists in the victory.
Averett finished the afternoon with a 45-34 rebound margin and tallied 17 assists and 17 steals as a team.
The Cougars recognized their five seniors prior to tip-off as Chambers, Johnson,
Samantha Tecson,
Kiara Smith and Carthon all got the start.
Averett returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 when it hosts Meredith College for the first round of the USA South tournament with the time still to be announced.
