DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday in non-conference action.
Lynchburg (1-2) managed to put up two runs in the top half of the second inning as back-to-back hits and a ground out to second base plated the Hornets first run. While a single to right field allowed the second run to score.
Averett (0-5) got a run back in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore
Nate Tuck singled to centerfield to open the inning and stole second base to advance into scoring position.
Sophomore
Jason Maggs knocked home Tuck for the Cougars lone run with a single through the left side, but Averett was unable to push across another run as Lynchburg held on for the 2-1 decision.
Freshman
Tyler Smith threw well in relief for the Cougars, tossing two scoreless innings while not allowing a hit. He gave way to fellow freshman
Braxton Eades, who did not surrender a hit in one inning of work and struck out one.
Additionally, sophomore
Avery Spicer dazzled in relief of Eades as the righty tossed three innings while scattering two hits and striking out five batters – which included a perfect three-strikeout inning.
Offensively, junior
Tucker Majetic led the charge recording two hits on the afternoon, while Tuck, Maggs and senior
Chase McKinney accounted for Averett's five hits.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday when they open USA South Conference action on the road against Huntingdon College with a double header beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
