DANVILLE, Va.
— The Averett University men's lacrosse team dropped its 2020 home opener to Alvernia University, 11-8, on Saturday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Alvernia (2-1) scored the first five goals of the game to take an early lead, before Averett (0-4) slowly started to battle back, cutting the gap to 6-3 at halftime. Both teams were neck-and-neck from there, with the Cougars cutting the gap to two goals on two separate occasions, including making it a 9-7 game early in the fourth quarter, but couldn't quite battle back as the Golden Wolves escaped with the win.
Sophomore
Parker Corbett led the team with three points on two goals and one assist, while junior
Rafael Walker and sophomore
Mason Foy added two goals apiece. Junior
Nate Hann and sophomore
Brenner Woodcock added the other two goals for Averett while Woodcock and sophomore
Mike Michaud tallied one assist each. Defensively, sophomore
Marques Fleming led the team with 11 ground balls while junior
Miska Granlund led the team with four caused turnovers. In goal, junior
Jacob Shriver made 14 saves.
Averett's eight goals were the second most in a game in program history while its 20 shots on goal tied the program record.
The Cougars return to action on March 4 when they host Wesley College at 1 p.m.
