BREVARD, N.C. — Averett University softball swept a non-conference doubleheader against conference foe Brevard College on Saturday. The Cougars won 5-1 and 7-2.
In the opener, Averett (3-1) trailed Brevard (2-4) 1-0 after the first inning, but the Cougars finished the game strong. Sophomore
Anna Coleman singled in the fourth and came around to score on a misplay by the right fielder to tie the game, 1-1. The next inning, sophomore
Hannah Thompson singled up the middle to score senior
Mallory Griffiths and give the Cougars the lead.
In the sixth, Averett pulled away with three runs thanks to RBI singles by sophomore
Erin Rankin and Thompson and a bases-loaded walk to Coleman.
Coleman went 3-for-3 in Game 1 as Averett totaled 12 hits.
Senior
Taylor Bailey (2-0) got the win, going all seven innings in the circle. She struck out three while allowing just one run — unearned — on two hits.
In Game 2, Averett used a three-run third inning to take the lead on an RBI single by sophomore
Zamyiah Mangum and a two-run double by senior
Nicole Cauthen. However, Brevard answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single to close the deficit to 3-2.
After weathering the storm, Averett silenced the Tornados the rest of the way. The Cougars added four insurance runs in the sixth inning to pad the lead. Senior
Brianna Harris smacked an RBI triple, and she later scored on an error. Then Coleman and Mangum each added RBI doubles for Averett later in the inning.
Averett also had 12 hits in Game 2, including two each by Mangum, Cauthen and Harris.
Senior
Dani Kahn, Bailey and Thompson all pitched for Averett, with Bailey getting the win in relief. Kahn and Thompson each had three strikeouts, and both of Brevard's runs were unearned.
Averett continues its road trip at Huntingdon College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
