LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Averett University baseball fell in the final two games of its three-game conference series at Covenant College on Saturday. Covenant edged Averett 4-2 in Game 1, then won the finale 9-3.
Â
Averett (0-16, 0-9 USA South) struck first in both games. In Game 1, the Cougars went ahead 1-0 in the second inning on freshman
Kyle Wilson's RBI double to right field, which scored senior
Cody Jones. The following inning, senior
Chase McKinney came home on a wild pitch after leading off the frame with a leadoff double to right-center, giving Averett a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Covenant (10-4, 6-0 USA South) got back within one on an RBI single in the fourth inning. The Scots went ahead by one thanks to two unearned runs in the fifth and added another unearned run in the sixth. Averett tried to rally in the last three innings, but double plays in two of those frames erased baserunners.
McKinney and Jones both had a pair of hits to lead the Cougars offensively. Freshman
Braxton Eades (0-2) pitched well despite the loss. He allowed just three runs — only one earned — on five hits and a walk while striking out four in five innings of work.
Â
In Game 2, Averett took a 1-0 lead in the first on senior
Andrew Lancaster's RBI single. Yet, Covenant answered with a four-run first inning to surge ahead. An RBI groundout in the second closed the gap to 4-2, but the Scots added two more runs in the bottom of the second. Down 6-2, Averett answered with an RBI double by McKinney to get back within three.
Covenant added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to pull away.
McKinney finished off a solid afternoon with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with two walks and a run scored in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Junior
Tanner Bradshaw also had two hits as the Cougars finished with 10 hits as a team.

Averett returns home to host non-conference foe Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday.
