DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University wrestling team pinned its way to a 43-7 victory over Greensboro College in dual action on Wednesday night at the Grant Center.
 
Senior Sam Braswell (nationally ranked No.4) got the Cougars off to a fast start, tech falling Mauricio Reyes 20-4 to give the Cougars a 5-0 advantage. 
 
The Pride added three points following a 9-1 decision by Josh Wilson over junior Joseph Jones, but senior Brandon Woody (nationally ranked No. 9) showed his dominance with a first period pin over Lucas Utt to extend the lead to 11-3. 
   
Following Woody's earn pin, Averett aided from a 24-0 run as junior Tony Blackman, sophomore Landon Childress, freshman Alex Turley and sophomore George Moseley (nationally ranked No. 11) all scored pins for the Cougars. 
 
Blackman managed to defeat his opponent in just under a minute, while Turley and Moseley all contributed first period falls. 
 
After trailing 35-3, Greensboro benefited from a major decision by Joel Kanagy over junior Nasser McCummings to make it 35-7. 
 
However, sophomore Billy Baldwin's 18-2 tech fall victory over Dominic Harris pushed the advantage to 40-7 with one weight class remaining
 
The final dual match of the evening proved to be one worth waiting for as heavyweights Brandon Williams and sophomore Trent Ragland (nationally ranked No. 14) were deadlocked 1-1 at the end of regulation and the first overtime period. Forcing sudden death where both wrestlers scoring an escape to even the match again at 2-2. Ragland won the deciding point on a stalling call from Williams to give the sophomore a 3-2 victory and the Cougars a 43-7 dual win. 
 
Averett has now won two straight over the Pride dating back to a 25-12 victory last season. 
 
The Cougars would continue their dual dominance over the Pride heading into exhibition matches as senior Will Merritt defeated Patrick Haskin in a hard-fought 5-3 overtime thriller, while freshman Jamar Christian added a 17-1 tech fall victory over Khalil Beck. 
 
Freshman Zion Carpenter turned in one of the Cougars top performances on the evening, pinning Kanagy in just 14 seconds, while fellow freshman Austin Long contributed a 6-5 win by decision. 
 
Additionally, freshman Kyle Sanders earned his first collegiate win with a first period pin over Utt, while Jones' 16-0 tech fall win over Reyes, sophomore Malik Reaker's first period pin over Utt and freshman Tommy Baldwin's 29 second pin over Haskins rounded out the Cougars evening against Greensboro. 
 
Averett returns to action Sunday when it battles Huntingdon College on the road.
