BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Averett University wrestling team (ranked No.23 nationally by trackwrestling) put together one of its best wrestling performances in program history on Wednesday. Improving to a perfect 7-0 on the season, following three wins over Division II Lander University (23-13), Emmanuel College (48-9) and host King University (31-16) for the best start in program history.
Lander Dual:
Senior
Sam Braswell (ranked No. 4 nationally by Intermat) rolled to three impressive victories on the afternoon to remain unbeaten on the season. Beginning with a 17-1 tech fall victory over Austin Ross to give Averett an early 5-0 advantage.
Lander (3-1) pulled within 5-4 of the Cougars following a 8-0 major decision victory over freshman
Alex Logsdon, but senior
Brandon Woody (ranked No. 10 nationally by Intermat) aided a 9-5 win by decision to give the Cougars an 8-4 lead.
Junior
Tony Blackman advantage that lead to 11-4 with an 8-1 win over Bryson Ethington, but the Bearcats cut the lead to 11-7 with a 10-5 decision over sophomore
Landon Childress.
Freshman
Alex Turley continued is impressive freshman campaign, winning by 13-1 by major decision over Joshua Cizmadia to give the Cougars a 15-4 edge.
Sophomore
George Moseley increased Averett's lead to 18-4 following an 8-2 victory at 174 pounds and freshman
Zion Carpenter who made his season debut at the 184-pound weight class added one of the Cougars most impressive showings of the match with a 19-2 tech fall victory over Ryan Humel.
Carpenter's tech fall victory proved to be all the points Averett needed on the even as freshman
Jamar Christian fell 6-3 at 197 pounds and sophomore
Trent Ragland lost 6-4 in overtime, but the damage had been done early as the Cougars controlled a 23-13 win.
In exhibition matches the Cougars finished 1-1 with freshman
Tommy Baldwin winning 6-0 and sophomore
Kowan Lee loosing by pin.
Emmanuel Dual:
Braswell picked up the second of his three wins on the afternoon with a second period pin over Eli Holton to give the Cougars a 6-0 advantage early over Emmanuel.
Emmanuel (0-15) got on the board with a 9-5 victory over Logsdon at 133 pounds, but Woody put Averett in command with a second period pin over Nicholas Volies for a 12-3 lead.
Lander managed to add its last points of the match in the 149-pound weight class with a first period pin over senior
Caleb Harmon, however, Childress put Luke Escalante to his back in the first period for an 18-9 edge.
Following Childress's pin, Averett rolled off four-straight pins to cap off an impressive 48-point showing against Emmanuel.
Turley got back to his pinning habits with a second period fall over Jesse DeJames, Moseley pinned Jonathan Oldknow in the first period and Carpenter pinned Myles Williams in the second period.
Sophomore
Billy Baldwin added a :24 second pin over Hayden Showden to finish the Cougars five-straight pin streak, while Ragland earned the victory at 285 pounds by forfeit.
Tommy Baldwin finished his evening with a 15-3 major decision victory in exhibition action over Luke Escalante.
King Dual:
Averett's most exciting dual of the evening came against host King as the Cougars benefitted early from a 19-3 tech fall victory by Braswell for a 5-0 advantage.
King (3-3), however, rolled off four-straight victories to take a 16-5 lead as Woody lost for the first time on the year 7-4 to Christian Small to give the Cougars their largest deficit off the season.
The Cougars pivotal match on Wednesday came down to the hot feet of Turley, who dominated Bo Perkins, holding Perkins in a front cradle for nearly the entire opening period before eventually pinning Perkins :39 seconds into the second period to cut into the deficit at 16-11.
Moseley put the Cougars in the lead for good with a first period fall over Josh Wynn for his third win on the evening, but the match swung heavenly in Averett's favor when Carpenter pinned Myles Williams in the second round to push the lead to 22-16.
Baldwin sealed the victory for Averett with a 5-1 victory at 197 pounds and Ragland tech falled Samari Suddeath 17-0 to give the Cougars their sixth victory of 30-plus points on the season.
While Carpenter added another victory by pin in exhibition action to finish 4-0 on the evening.
Turley finished the evening with two pins, pushing his national lead to 13, while Averett picked up three of the biggest victories in program history.
The Cougars return to the mat on Saturday when they host Southern Virginia University at 2 p.m. for a dual meet.
