ASHLAND, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball program traveled to Randolph-Macon College for the Randolph-Macon Tip-off Classic and fell 65-49 in Game 1 on Friday night inside Crenshaw Gymnasium.
Averett (0-5) was led by the seniors
Camryn Lunsford and
Genesis Weiters. Lunsford had 18 points, four rebounds, four assists and six steals while Weiters tallied a season-high 16 points and five rebounds.
The Cougars trailed by 24 at halftime but cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to 14 early in the fourth quarter before the comeback fell short. Both teams struggled from the field as the Cougars shot 32 percent while the Yellow Jackets shot 33 percent.
Randolph-Macon (3-0) out-rebounded Averett 54-38 and was led by Becca Anthony, who had 21 points.
Averett is back in action in Game 2 of the Randolph-Macon College Classic on Saturday against Lebanon Valley College at 1 p.m.
