Baldwin notches double-double in men's basketball loss to Gettysburg

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's basketball lost 63-49 to Gettysburg College in the Fink's Jewelers Coaches Tournament hosted by Randolph-Macon College on Thursday.

Averett (2-7), shorthanded and seeing its first action since Dec. 11, opened the game with a 9-4 advantage over the first five-plus minutes. Gettysburg, however, put together a 17-3 run to surge ahead 21-12 with 9:01 left in the first half. Junior Corey Baldwin scored 14 of Averett's 20 points in the first period as the Cougars entered the locker room trailing 32-20.

The Cougars stayed within striking distance in the second half but couldn't overcome their first-half deficit. Averett got as close as six points on senior KeShawn Lewis' 3-pointer that made the score 42-36 with 12:13 remaining before the Bullets extended their lead back to double-digits.

Baldwin finished one point shy of his career high with a team-high 23 points. He notched his second double-double of the season, grabbing a career-best 13 rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Lewis also missed his career-high by one point, finishing with 16 points. Junior Bryson McLaughlin added six rebounds.

Averett is scheduled to play host No. 2 Randolph-Macon on Friday at 2 p.m. to finish the three-day event.
