Men's basketball rallies in second half to beat Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University men's basketball overcame a halftime deficit and shut down Randolph College in the second half for a 74-56 non-conference road win Wednesday night.

Randolph (3-5) led for most of the first half and held a nine-point advantage with 1:32 left in the first period before freshman Bryce Shaw hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to help Averett (2-5) close within 46-43 at halftime. That momentum, along with some stingy defense, helped propel Averett in the second half.

The Cougars held Randolph to a mere 12 points in the entire second half as Averett raced past the WildCats and built a double-digit lead to secure the win.

Junior Corey Baldwin's double-double of 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds helped give Averett an edge. Averett also benefited from its bench play as redshirt freshman Jem Lowrance netted a career-high 12 points to go along with Shaw's six points. Sophomore Jordan Lewis added 10 points, senior Jalen Rowell had nine points and junior Bryson McLaughlin had a team-high 12 boards for the Cougars, who shot 49.2 percent from the floor and went 11-for-21 from beyond the arc.

Averett, which improved to 3-0 all-time against Randolph, has won two of its last three games.

Averett opens conference play on the road Saturday at N.C. Wesleyan College.
