DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University wrestling senior Sam Braswell became the wrestler in program history to earn a No. 1 ranking when it was announced by d3wrestle.com on Tuesday.

A native of Daytona Beach, Florida, Braswell is off to the best start in his collegiate career, compiling a perfect 10-0 mark on the year at 125 pounds with two pin victories and an impressive five wins by tech fall and needs just two wins to surpass the 100-win plateau for his career.

Recently, Braswell was ranked No. 4 in the country by FloWrestling.com, however, his No. 1 ranking by trackwrestling.com further adds to an already impressive collegiate career.  As Braswell currently ranks second all-time with 98 career victories, first with 20 tech fall wins and 26 major decisions, while being named the first First Team All-American in program history a season ago.

"Braswell is obsessed about his craft and about being the best," said head wrestling coach Blake Roulo. "He is our leader and our spark plug that gets us started in every dual. Trains like a madman and gets excited about beating the best in the nation. He's like Michael Jordan only if MJ was short and weighed a 125 pounds."

Braswell has been an important part in the Cougars starting the year off 8-0 as a team and climbing to No. 15 in the country as ranked by FloWrestling.com.

Additionally, senior Brandon Woody cracked trackwrestling.com's top-10, landing at No. 6 overall after beginning the year 11-1, while sophomore's George Moseley and Trent Ragland are both receiving votes.

Braswell and Woody will put their national rankings to the test on Tuesday when they host Bluefield College at 7 p.m. for senior night at the Grant Center.
