DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball plated two runs in the ninth inning but the comeback attempt fell short as the Cougars lost 6-4 to Brevard College in Game 3 of their non-conference series at Owen-Fulton Field on Sunday.
Averett (0-4) took the early 2-0 lead in the third inning when junior
Nate Tuck singled down the left field line, scoring freshmen
Logan Albertson and
Zelgin Jackson with two outs.
Brevard (3-2), however, got both runs right back in the top of the fourth. Logan Clark's RBI triple got the Tornados on the board, and Noah Harris brought him home moments later with a single through the left side to knot the game, 2-2.
The Tornados broke the tie with a big seventh inning, Brevard got three RBI singles and scored another run on an error to jump in front 6-2.
Averett looked to make up its four-run deficit in the ninth but fell just short. Senior
Tanner Bradshaw's two-run double to the left-center gap pulled the Cougars within 6-4 before Brevard was able to get out of the inning to end the game.
Bradshaw and Albertson each had two hits for Averett.
Freshman right-hander
Shane Michel had a good outing in his debut start for the Cougars. He struck out four in 3.2 innings before allowing two runs. The Cougars also got scoreless relief outings from junior
Mack Rexrode and seniors
Ben Kimberlin and
Cole Spain.
Averett hosts William Peace University in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
