Box Score MISENHEIMER, N.C. — The Averett University women's basketball program earned another conference victory 69-54 over Pfeiffer University Sunday afternoon in Merner Gym. The Cougars scored 17 unanswered points in the first quarter to create an early advantage to help lift Averett to the victory.
Averett (3-4, 3-4 USA South) ended the first half up 42-24. Pfeiffer (2-1, 2-1 USA South) only shot 17.9 percent in the first half which led to the 18-point deficit at halftime. The Cougars had 13 assists in the first half along with six three-pointers.
The third quarter gave Pfeiffer hope as they cut the Cougars lead down to 15 headed into the fourth quarter. The run in the first quarter proved to be the difference for Averett as they were able to hang on to that lead throughout the rest of the game. Freshman
Shunte Bethea set a career high with 20 points shooting a staggering 77 percent from the field.
Averett was also led by junior
Camryn Lunsford, who set a career high in assists with nine and added 12 points. Junior
Genesis Weiters tallied eight points and seven rebounds.
Pfeiffer was led by Brina Bentley, who had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Falcons.
Averett returns to action on Monday night when it hosts Pfeiffer for a 7 p.m. matchup.
