The Hornets answered the Cougars lone run with two more runs in the sixth to control an 8-3 lead before later adding a run in the ninth to extend their deficit to 9-3.
The Cougars went out on a high note though adding another run in the bottom of the ninth when junior
Brandon Hatcher singled to right field scoring freshman
Brandt Brophy to pull within 9-4, but the damage had been done early as Lynchburg held on for the victory.
Junior
Mack Rexrode threw well in relief for the Cougars pitching 1.1 scoreless innings not allowing a hit and walking just one batter. Senior
Ben Kimberlin who entered in replace of Rexrode to pitch the eighth inning, equaled Rexrode's effort with a scoreless inning before fellow senior
Cole Spain got the ball for the ninth, striking out three while allowing an unearned run.
Freshman
Hudson Rowe who pinch hit late in the game picked up his first collegiate hit in the loss, doubling down the right field line, while sophomore
Nolan Maccabe made it back-to-back games with a double and Hatcher and Jackson each picked up stolen bases.
Averett returns back to action on March 16 when they travel to Ferrum College for a 3 p.m. matchup.
