DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's tennis program earned a 7-2 victory over Division II Shaw University on Sunday afternoon at the Averett Tennis Courts.
Averett (3-2) was able to complete a clean sweep in singles play over the Bears. Shaw (1-2) is the second Division II school the Cougars have defeated this 2021 season.
Sophomore
Jorge Figueroa and freshman
Rufus Nurminen won in straight sets for the Cougars at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Both No. 3 and No. 4 singles went to super tie breakers as senior
Stan Martherus edged out a victory as well as freshman
Lasse Bonn. Senior
Thomas Woodcock clinched the victory for the Cougars at No. 5 singles winning in straight sets.
Evgeniy Bogdasaryan completed the sweep for Averett at the No. 6 singles.
In doubles action the Cougars only earned one point from the duo of Martherus and Bonn who won very decisively 8-0.
The Cougars are back in action when they travel to Hampden-Sydney College Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
