DANVILLE, Va. — Junior
Cameron Stamm's walk-off RBI double completed Averett University softball's doubleheader sweep of Carolina University on Monday afternoon at Cougar Field. Averett dominated Game 1 for an 11-1 win in five innings, then won 6-5 with Stamm's game-winning hit in Game 2.
Stamm drove in junior
Anna Coleman from second base with a double off the wall in left-center field in the bottom of the seventh and break a 5-5 tie. Coleman had reached with a one-out double down the left field line to get into scoring position for Averett (5-7)
Down 1-0 in Game 2, sophomore
Hannah Heath tied it with her RBI double to left-center in the second inning. An inning later, Stamm came through with her other big hit of the day — a three-run blast to left center to propel the Cougars in front 4-1.
Carolina (5-11) got a pair of hits and took advantage of three errors in the top of the fourth to tie the game, 4-4. Averett regained a 5-4 advantage in the fifth on junior
Kourtnie Blankenship's RBI single to left, but the Bruins answered with a tying run in the sixth to set up Stamm's late heroics in the final frame.
Stamm went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in Game 2, while Coleman added two hits off the bench.
Freshman
Taylor Sullivan (2-1) earned the victory in the circle in relief after also winning Game 1 for her first two collegiate pitching wins. She struck out nine total batters over two games, including five in a complete-game effort to open the day.
The Cougars dominated Carolina in the opener. After the Bruins scored a run in the first, Averett put up 11 unanswered runs to win by the run rule — including a six-run fourth inning in which the Cougars put up six hits.
Junior
Lauren Johnston had a 3-for-3 effort in Game 1 with three runs scored and a run driven in, and sophomores
Lauren Nelson and
Destiney Holland along with Sullivan each had two hits. Holland, Sullivan and Stamm each drove in a pair of runs in the opener.
Averett hosts non-conference foe Roanoke College on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
