DANVILLE, Va.
— The Averett University women's soccer team earned its first victory under head coach
Meghan Mauzy-Fleming 2-1 against Mary Baldwin University Thursday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (1-5, 1-5 USA South) inched out to a 1-0 lead after sophomore
Madison Morin found the back of the net in the 32nd minute. Freshman
Clarice Peters was credited with the assist playing a marvelous through ball for Morin to finish. The Cougars headed into halftime clinging to a 1-0 advantage before entering a 45-minute weather delay.
Peters was able to give Averett a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute as freshman
Emily Brinson played a ball into Peters who round housed it past the goalie.
Mary Baldwin (1-2-1, 1-2-1 USA South) cut into the Cougar lead just 10 minutes later scoring in the 80th minute. Peters hit the crossbar in the 86th minute trying to put the game away for Averett, who held on to earn a 2-1 win.
The Cougars out shot the Flying Squirrels 23-13 putting nine of those on goal. Freshman goal keeper,
Alyson Kinkopf, tallied six saves producing a class performance in goal.
Averett concludes its 2021 season at Pfeiffer University March 27 at 1 p.m.
