FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Senior
Tanner Bradshaw crushed a grand slam to help Averett University baseball earn a 5-3 road victory over Methodist University in USA South Conference action on Saturday.
Averett (2-8, 1-0 USA South) used a five run sixth inning to take a 5-3 advantage in Saturday's conference clash.
Junior
Jason Maggs tallied the first run of the inning on an RBI single through the right side to score sophomore
Kyle Wilson to pull within 3-1 of the Monarchs.
However, the damage would be done following a walk by freshman
Zelgin Jackson to load the bases as Bradshaw used just one swing to put four runs on the board for the Cougars to take the lead.
Methodist (6-9, 0-1 USA South) benefitted from a run in the bottom half of the first inning and a run in the fifth to take a 2-0 advantage, but the Cougars five runs in the sixth proved to be the difference as the Monarchs were able to tally just one more run in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior
Avery Spicer picked up the win for the Cougars pitching eight strong innings allowing nine hits and two runs while striking out five batters.
Spicer was lifted in the bottom of the ninth for senior
Cole Spain who struck out two batters to earn the save and help Averett snap an 11-game skid against Methodist.
Bradshaw and Wilson both added a pair of hits on the afternoon, while Maggs, senior
Ryan Traylor and freshman
Logan Albertson all contributed hits.
Averett returns back to the diamond on Sunday when it travels back to Fayetteville, North Carolina for a USA South doubleheader against Methodist beginning at 1 and 4 p.m.
