SALEM, Va. — The Averett University baseball team lost a 16-3 non-conference bout to Roanoke College on the road Tuesday afternoon.
Averett (3-10) took an early 1-0 advantage in the opening inning after freshman
Logan Albertson singled to open the inning and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
Roanoke (10-4) knocked in nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a controlling 9-1 edge.
The Maroons added four more runs in the fourth inning before adding a trio of insurance tallies over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The Cougars managed to get back on the board with a run in the eighth following another wild pitch and Albertson came around to score his second run of the afternoon in the ninth to pull within 16-3 on a sacrifice fly out by freshman
Zelgin Jackson.
Freshman
Brandt Brophy collected his first collegiate hit in the loss, while Albertson finished an impressive 3-5 at the dish with two runs scored.
Senior
Sawyer Smith toss a scoreless eighth inning in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters.
Averett returns to action on Friday when it opens a three-game USA South Conference series on the road against William Peace University beginning at 7 p.m.
