DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team defeated Brevard College 13-7 Friday afternoon on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium. The Cougars outscored the Tornados 6-1 in the final quarter of play to secure the victory.
Averett (4-1) set a school record in goals scored with 13 passing its last total of 12.
Brevard (0-2) etched out to an early one goal advantage in the first minute of play. This was followed by a three goal run by the Cougars who headed into the second period with a 3-1 lead. Junior
Mike Michaud scored back to back goals during that stretch after freshman
Liam Taylor evened the score up. Taylor tallied two goals with one assists and six ground balls while Michaud totaled three goals and one assist.
That early 1-0 lead would be the only time the Tornados were out in front, the Cougars headed into the halftime break leading 5-2. Brevard began the third period on a three goal run to cause the second tie of the game. Junior
Parker Corbett broke the tie with one of his three goals of the the game just one minute after the tie. Corbett also added six ground balls.
Heading into the fourth quarter the Cougars only held a one-point lead. Averett shut Brevard down only allowing one goal in the period and scoring six to create the final score of 13-7. Freshman
Connor Taff scored two goals in the final period and also added two ground balls on the game.
Junior
Brenner Woodcock added a goal with two assists for the Cougars while senior
Rafael Walker added a goal and six ground balls. Senior
Nate Hann also added a goal for Averett.
The Cougars return to action on March 13th when they travel to Methodist University at 1 p.m.
