Volleyball sweeps Pfeiffer to clinch a top-two seed in USA South East Division

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball eased past Pfeiffer University 3-0 on Saturday to give seniors McKenzie Miller and Myka Patterson a victory in their final regular season match in the Grant Center. The Cougars won 25-16, 25-13 and 25-15.

Averett (11-6, 5-2) clinched the No. 2 seed in the USA South Conference East Division with the win, guaranteeing the Cougars a home match in the East semifinals, which is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, April 14. The USA South will announce the tournament seeding and bracket once the regular season slate is completed on Sunday.

Against Pfeiffer (5-7, 2-5 USA South), Averett pulled away down the stretch to take the opening set. The Cougars took the final six points, ending it on Patterson's service ace. Averett jumped out of the gate quickly in Set 2 by going ahead 8-2. The Falcons never recovered in the frame.

The Cougars also opened Set 3 with an 8-2 advantage. Pfeiffer got within 16-12 midway through, leading to an Averett timeout. However, Averett outscored Pfeiffer 9-3 the rest of the way to seal the three-set win.

Averett, which is 8-0 all-time against Pfeiffer, also beat the Falcons 3-1 on Thursday in a non-conference matchup.

Miller had a double-double of 28 assists and 12 digs and Patterson had a team-high three service aces to go with four digs. Sophomore Morgan Barnes led Averett with eight kills and five blocks, while juniors Sarah Shropshire and Zamyiah Mangum each had seven kills. Freshmen Erin Gray and Skylyn Ostwalt chipped in 11 digs and seven digs, respectively.
