DANVILLE, Va. — Sophomore
Nolan Maccabe stole his way into the Averett University baseball record book, while the Cougars tied the program record with nine stolen bases in their 10-9 USA South Conference victory over Mary Baldwin University on Friday.
Averett (6-17, 4-6 USA South) clubbed an impressive six runs to open Friday's conference battle, taking a 1-0 advantage after Maccabe singled to open the game, stole second and third before coming in on freshman
Zelgin Jackson's RBI.
Jackson scored after junior
Brandon Hatcher reached on an RBI field error. Hatcher added the third run of the inning on an RBI single by freshman
Logan Albertson and scored the fourth run following a stolen base by Albertson.
Sophomore
Kyle Wilson doubled in Albertson for the fifth run and freshman
Brandt Brophy drove in Wilson on an RBI single.
Mary Baldwin (0-10, 0-8 USA South) got a run back in the second inning, but benefitted from four more runs in the third inning to pull within 6-5 of Averett.
The Cougars answered with three runs in the bottom half of the third, extending their lead to 7-5 with Wilson scored on a wild pitch and further adding to the line score when senior
Ryan Traylor drove in senior
Tanner Bradshaw who tripled with bases empty and scored on the RBI groundout by Traylor.
Averett scored its ninth run on a catcher's interference call that allowed Maccabe to cross, however, Mary Baldwin pulled back with 9-8 with a run in the fourth and another in the sixth.
The Cougars answered the Fighting Squirrels run in the sixth with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Albertson plated Hatcher for the deciding run.
The Fighting Squirrels managed to push a run across in the ninth, but Traylor entered the game from shortstop to get the final two out to preserve the 10-9 victory.
Maccabe, Albertson and Wilson all finished with two hits for the Cougars, while sophomore
David Asbill earned his first collegiate victory in relief and senior
Cole Spain struck out five batters out of the bullpen.
Maccabe tied the program record with four stolen bases in the victory. Matching Averett Hall of Famer Gene Yost, Adam Higgins,
Kyle Vidano and most recently Dallas Smithers who tied the record against William Peace University in 2016. Additionally the Cougars nine stolen bases as a team tied the program record set against New York University-Poly back in 2011.
The Cougars return to action on Sunday when they host Mary Baldwin for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
