DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball sent its seniors off with a doubleheader sweep of Greensboro College on Sunday at Cougar Field as the team celebrated Senior Day. Averett won 1-0 and 6-1.
Senior
Kaitlyn Aherron provided the heroics in Game 1 for Averett (13-13, 8-4 USA South). The Cougars' all-time career leader in home runs and runs batted in added to her totals with a first-inning solo homer to right-center, which proved to be the difference. That was all the run support freshman right-hander
Taylor Sullivan (5-3) needed in the circle as she went the distance for a shutout while strikeout out five.

In Game 2, Averett again jumped on Greensboro (24-9, 7-5 USA South) in the opening inning. Junior
Hannah Thompson provided an RBI single to score senior
Mallory Griffiths, and junior
Anna Coleman added an RBI double moments later to put the Cougars in front 2-0.
Greensboro responded with a run in the third inning, but Averett answered right back with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. An error allowed two to score, and senior
Casey Cook hit a two-run single to right field to make it 6-1.
Aherron (5-6) went the distance in the circle in Game 2, striking out six.
The Cougars just missed finishing among the top two in the East Division, thus ending their season. However they were able to play the spoiler for Greensboro, which dropped out of the top two spots with the two losses.
Prior to the game, Averett honored Aherron, Cook and Griffiths, along with fellow senior
Myka Patterson. They also welcomed back most of last year's seniors to join in the celebration.
