DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball swept a conference doubleheader with Meredith College, beating the Avenging Angels 3-2 and 4-2 on Saturday at Cougar Field.

Averett (9-11, 5-3 USA South) overcame a 2-0 deficit in Game 1 to earn the win. Meredith (6-12, 4-4 USA South) plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double and RBI single, but the Cougars answered immediately. Junior
Lauren Johnston singled home senior
Kaitlyn Aherron, and senior
Mallory Griffiths and junior
Hannah Thompson each drew bases-loaded walks to surge Averett ahead 3-2.
Thompson came in to pitch the final three innings to earn the save, her first of the season. Freshman
Taylor Sullivan (3-2) recorded the win, allowing just two runs over four innings.
Griffiths and Aherron both had a pair of hits in the opener for the Cougars.
Griffiths continued to swing a hot bat in Game 2, leading off the bottom of the first inning with a single before coming around to score on Aherron's RBI single to deep right-center field, which gave Averett a 1-0 lead over Meredith.
Averett added three more runs in the second inning to extend its lead to 4-0. Thompson's RBI single scored junior
Cameron Stamm, and junior
Anna Coleman followed with a two-run single to right field.
Those four runs proved to be enough despite Meredith scoring a run in the fourth and seven innings.
Griffiths and Coleman each had two hits for the Cougars in Game 2.
Aherron (4-5) went the distance in the circle to pick up the victory. She struck out five while allowing five hits and six walks and didn't allow an earned run.

The Cougars return to action on Thursday when they travel to Ferrum College for a non-conference doubleheader.
